How to Choose a Hydraulic Piston Pump

Pull these figures off the pump tag or the failed unit before you order, and match each one:

• Displacement (CID/GPM) — volume of fluid moved per revolution, or flow at a given RPM. Match it to the flow your circuit needs so cylinders and motors run at the intended speed.
• Max pressure (PSI) — the continuous working pressure rating. Confirm the replacement meets or exceeds your relief-valve setting, with margin for spikes.
• Rotation — clockwise or counter-clockwise viewed from the shaft end. A reversed pump will not prime correctly, so confirm direction against the drive.
• Mount (SAE A/B) — the bolt pattern and pilot that bolt the pump to the drive. The flange must match the bracket or adapter already in place.
• Shaft / spline — keyed, straight, or splined, plus tooth count and diameter. The shaft has to seat in the existing coupler or pump drive.
• Port — inlet and outlet thread and size (SAE, NPT, or flange). Match it so your hoses and fittings thread on without adapters.

Which Hydraulic Pump Is Right for the Job?

Piston pumps earn their place on high-pressure or variable-flow circuits, but they are not always the economical pick.
