How to Choose a Log Splitter Valve

A log splitter valve has to match the pump and cylinder it sits between. Confirm these before ordering:

• Flow rating (GPM): Match or exceed your two-stage pump's high-flow output. Many splitter valves are rated to roughly 25 GPM — verify against your pump.
• Pressure rating (PSI): Most log splitter circuits run in the 2,500–3,500 PSI range; confirm the valve's rated working and relief pressure against your system.
• Port size and thread: Inlet, outlet/tank, and work ports are typically SAE or NPT — check the thread and size so your fittings and hoses line up.
• Function and spool: Standard splitter valves use a 4-way, 3-position spool with an auto-return (detent) on the extend or retract stroke. Some add an adjustable detent or a regenerative circuit for faster cycle times.
• Mount and relief: Check the mounting pattern and whether an adjustable relief valve is built in or needs to be added.

Which Log Splitter Valve Is Right for the Job?

The deciding factor is spool function and detent behavior. A valve with auto-return on the extend stroke kicks the spool back to neutral when the cylinder reaches full extension or the wedge stalls against a tough round — useful for unattended cycling. Detent-on-retract returns the valve when the ram fully retracts. If you only need manual control, a 3-position spool without a detent gives you a held position at the lever. To confirm fit, match the valve's flow and pressure rating to your Two Stage Pumps output and the cylinder it drives; an undersized valve will overheat the oil and bog the cycle. If you are not sure which spool you have, photograph the port stampings and the lever detent and send them over.
